Andrew M. Cumo, son of former New York Governor Mario Cumo, abruptly pulled out of the race for the Democratic nomination for the governorship. The New York Times called the withdrawl a "spectacular humiliation" since Cumo appeared at the press conference where he announced his withdrawal with former President Clinton and Charles B. Rangel, both prominent Democrats who were publicly calling for his withdrawl. Sen. Hillary Clinton had also played a "subtle but influential role" in the campaign by H. Carl McCall for the nomination. Polls indicate that if Cumo had no bowed out he would have been soundly defeated by McCall in the primary.
