Senate Still Too Close to Call
The New York Times is reporting that eight Senate races are neck and neck, including the once safe seat Senator Torricelli held. Asked yesterday to assess his party's chance of keeping its bare majority, Senator John B. Breaux, a Louisiana Democrat, said today, "It's certainly not as good as the day before yesterday," the day Torricelli dropped out. Beyond New Jersey, at least seven other Senate races are considered tossups by politicians and strategists in both parties. Four are currently held by Republicans in Arkansas, Colorado, New Hampshire and Texas. Three are held by Democrats in Minnesota, South Dakota and Missouri. While the President's party tends to lose seats in a midterm election, Republicans are fighting hard to take back a majority in the Senate.
