Rep. Richard Burr has formed an exploratory committee to examine whether he should run for the Senate seat held by Democrat John Edwards, and supposedly he has the backing of the White House. He is a five-term Republican from the Triad who many thought would run for the Senate seat now held by Elizabeth Dole (but was undercut by the White House when they pushed Dole for the Republican nomination). The AP says that the exploratory committee will have some heavy-hitters as its chairs: "'The exploratory committee will be co-chaired by former Sens. Jesse Helms, Lauch Fairclotch and Jim Broyhill, and former Govs. Jim Martin and Jim Holshouser,' Burr said."
It's February, 2003 and we are already ramping up to November 2004. Geez.
