After an opening 65 to be T6 at the Bob Hope, Neal Lancaster (the pride of Smithfield, NC) fired (+1 73) today. He's now T52 at (-6), a full 11 shots back of Joe Ogilvie, who followed his opening 64 with a 63. Lefty is T2, three shots back. Nice to see him playing well considering how well Tiger, Els, and Vijay have played so far this year.
My man, Fred Couples, is -13 after going 65, 66. For anyone who has seen Fred in Skins Game competition, it should be no shock that he's doing well in an event that requires you to go for pins on every hole. I'll tell the story of my backgound with Fred another time.
Meanwhile, WFU's most recent golf alum, Bill Haas, is T12 after 67, 66. Rounds of 70, 68 have his old man, Jay, T52. I'll tell my story about Jay Haas later as well. I was surprised to see Jay play this week. The Hope always requires very red numbers, and Jay plays better when winning scores are higher. But, the pull to play with his boy is great.
The Haas boys are besting the Stadlers this week. No surprise to most. The Haas men are -17 to the Stadlers' -11. (Craig is T23 and Kevin is T101.)
Sad news, David Duval's struggles continue as he's +17 after rounds of 82, 79. Remember how great he once was? He's currently six shots back of Lanny Wadkins. I didn't even realize Lanny still played.
