Cap numbers and the NHL lockout

Peter King pointed out a few facts that I did not know in today's Monday Morning Quarterback column. First, the NFL's salary cap per team is going to be $85 million in 2005. That money is split between 53 players. The NHL players' union rejected a cap number of $42.5 million per year. That number would seem to be low compared to the NFL, except for the fact that NHL rosters are about half of NFL rosters. This means that the NHL players' union rejected an offer by the owners where they would be paid about the same money as NFL players in a league that has much, much less TV revenue. Unbelievable.
