An impressive late push gave UNC a 75-73 win over the Dookies. (Sean May should be National POY.) The Deacs got a big play from Paul to beat State late in Raleigh.
While it is true the two games were won by big players making big plays, the officiating in the ACC's big games needs to be addressed. It is fine if a crew wants a game called closely or loosely, but they need to find ways to be consistent. UNC got brutalized by Duke - repeated reach-ins went uncalled. (Apparently UNC coach Roy Williams's son, Scott Williams (former UNC guard) was ejected from the Dean Dome for yelling at the refs in the first half.) NCSU got the bitter end when Atsur was fouled with 5 seconds to go yet the foul went without a whistle.
Until officiating improves, the college game will still suffer. In my opinion, poor officiating was the cause of the incident between Temple and St. Joe's in the A-10 (only when calls weren't made did Chaney send in his "goon"). This needs to be addressed by the NCAA for the good of the game.
The seeding for the ACC Tournament is out. I like Duke's chances with their early draw. UNC may get Maryland on Friday. Wake may get a rematch with NC State. Duke, meanwhile, gets either Miami or UVA (nice for the Devils). I suppose it pays to be third best.
If UNC goes through Maryland, Georgia Tech, and then either Wake or Duke to win in DC, that will be incredible. I for one will not be expecting the Heels to cut down those nets (though I love pleasant surprises).
Oh, by the way, the last time UNC won the ACC regular season outright, they won the National Championship.
