Coaching Combo

I am combining two early posts because I realized they have a connection. Larry Hunter, while being wooed byWestern Carolina, is also a candidate at Richmond, now that Jerry Wainwright has gone to DePaul. UNC assistant Steve Robinson is also on the Richmond wishlist, but I'd be surprised if he made that move.

Jerry Wainwright will be the new head basketball coach at DePaul. This is a fantastic hire. Wainwright came to be a known commodity after his UNC-Wilmington teams showed great promise a few years ago. He moved from the NC coast to Richmond a couple of years ago (a move I questioned), but now he is moving to the big-time in the Big East. Look for Coach Wainwright to be successful at DePaul where he can recruit more talent than he has had since his time as an assistant to Dave Odom at Wake Forest in the early 1990s.

NC State assistant basketall coach Larry Hunter may be getting a new head coaching position. After serving as head coach at Ohio University, Hunter came to Raleigh to serve on Sendek's staff. Hunter brought in his Princeton-style offense, which has enabled the Wolfpack to be successful and has enabled Sendek to remain employed. If Hunter goes to Western Carolina (as he should), this could be a second major blow to Herb Sendek (following losing Julius Hodge to graduation). I suggest Hunter take the job in Cullowhee. There is no guarantee Sendek and his staff will remain in Raleigh much longer, and Hunter deserves a head coaching position. As good as this news is for Hunter though, it is equally bad for Sendek.Hat Tip: John Branch.
