UNC Radio

Congratulations are in order for the Tar Heel Sports Network team of Woody Durham and Mick Mixon.

The Woody Durham Distinguished Professorship in Communications Studies has been created in honor of The Voice of the Tar Heels. This is an honor that is well-deserved.

Speaking of professorships, Mick Mixon is having to leave his position as a sports journalism professor at UNC as he takes his new job as the play-by-play man for the Carolina Panthers. Mixon leaves UNC after working with Woody Durham since 1989. (I'm not sure why the News & Record chose to put that story in the "hockey" section...anyone understand that?) Mixon will not be able to cover UNC football, but if needed he will be able to fill-in on UNC basketball broadcasts if needed.

While it is merely speculation at this point, it is rumored that UNC football great Don McCauley may replace Mixon for UNC football coverage and UNC basketball star Eric Montross may handle the basketball duties. Sadly, Stephen Gates would likely have been the replacement for Mixon in both positions had he not died in a tragic accident on I-40 in 2003. His death has led to the push for "Stephen's Law" in the NC General Assembly.
